Known as the ‘Buckeye State’, Ohio was admitted as the 17th state on March 1st 1803.
Ohio’s motto is “With God, all things are possible”. It is derived from the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 19, Verse 26.
In 2012 Ohio swung to a 'Blue' state.
Ohio is a Iroquois Native Indian word meaning "great river" .
In the Treaty of Paris in 1783, Britain ceded all claims to Ohio country to the United States. Ohio was then under the Northwest Ordinance 1787.
On February 19, 1803, US President Thomas Jefferson signed an act of Congress that approved Ohio's boundaries and constitution. However, Congress had never passed a resolution formally admitting Ohio as the 17th state. The current custom of Congress declaring an official date of statehood did not begin until 1812, with Louisiana admission as the 18th state. Although no formal resolution of admission was required, when the oversight was discovered in 1953, Ohio Senator George Bender, Republican, introduced a bill in Congress to admit Ohio to the Union retroactive to March 1, 1803, which marks the date when the Ohio Assembly first convened.
