Howdy! Where Ya'l From?

Introduce yourself.  Greet and welcome newcomers.  I myself hale from Chicago but visited Waxahachie as a teen (which only had one stoplight, a Piggly Wiggly and roller rink at the time)  and fell in love with Texas, the land and the people.  I finally had the opportunity to move to North Arlington three years ago and wish I had made the move 30 years ago.  There are so many opportunities in The Lone Star State and I want to learn more about what issues native Texans are concerned over; gain…

A Little History:

Population per the 2012 census- 26,059,203

Texas was admitted as the 28th state on December 29, 1845. Officially since 1930 her  motto is “Friendship”.

Many probably think "Remember the Alamo" is the Texas state motto. This is not completely out in the blue as it was the Texas motto for the Republic of Texas from 1836-45.

Battle of the Alamo occurred February 23 – March 6, 1836.

“Don't Mess with Texas" was adopted in 1986 as a litter campaign but over time the slogan has grown as an example of pride in Texas culture.

Texas in 2012 went ‘Red’. There were 13,646,226 registered voters and the turnout was 21%. We must work together to keep TX a ‘Red’ state and ensure more Republicans exercise their voting privilege

______.

Texas was an independent sovereign nation until it was granted statehood. Texas produced its own Declaration of Independence on March 6, 1836.

In 1821, Mexico won its independence from Spain. The nation then found itself embroiled in Indian Wars.

Interestingly, the United States flag was the 5th of 6 national flags to fly over Texas. The state has been controlled by Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the United States and, later, the Confederate States of America.

The annexation of Texas into the Union presented two major problems the nature of the issues were of one of international concern and of the domestic.

The international issues were concerns with Great Britain and Mexico. “The British were opposed to annexation and even contemplated the use of force to prevent it. They did not wish to add Texas to the British Empire, but they did want to prevent the westward expansion of the United States, to reap commercial advantages from Texas trade, and to tamper with the American tariff system and the institution of slavery.”

The British worked with the government of Mexico which agreed to acknowledge the independence of Texas on condition that she not annex herself to ‘any’ country.

On the domestic side granting statehood slavery was front and center.

It took five presidents Jackson, Van Buren, Harrison, Tyler and Polk to deal with annexation issues before TX secured admittance to the Union.

After Texas being granted statehood the next year the Mexican-American War began.

Texas was the 7th state to secede from the Union on a vote of 166 to 8. Sam Houston was a staunch Unionist.

Some 60,000 join the Confederacy, it is said that many joined not for the Confederacy per se but for their love they had for Texas. Texas also had many who joined the Union Army.

The last battle of the Civil War was fought at Palmito Ranch near Brownsville, TX on May 13th 1865.

Texas Reconstruction Period

March 30th 1870 Texas was readmitted to the Union.

The idea of Texas seceding once again from the Republic remains alive today.

TX leads the nation in total productivity. It is the leading oil producer in the nation. More beef is produced in Texas than in any other state. It is still the nation's largest cotton producer. Texas is a giant in the space industry, and is a major player in high technology. Texas holds the nation’s lead in natural gas production at 23%. Oil was first detected in Texas in July of 1543.
